they were the original canadians.. the two french colonies were 1. Acadia, who got expelled by the bits to louisiana (but many returned later on) and 2. canada (which is now quebec).. the british turned canada into lower canada and created upper canada for english settlers

Don't forget some Acadians were expelled to New England on slave ships by the anglos. Many years ago there was a notable french canadian community, but slowly it faded including the French language in newer generations, as it was not being taught in schools..
