That would keep the old addressing system still compatible, and that is not even a new idea, that's how 8 bits registers were extended into 16 bits, 32 bits and so on (for instance).

That still wouldn't have been enough, and still would have broken compatibility by changing the address length and thus the packet headers. IPv6 fixes a bunch of other protocol level bullshit with v4 besides address length, from routing to address management to large frame handling, but everyone is stuck on v4 on corporate networks because of bullshit from Cisco and Juniper and Amazon. "Waaah the address looks funny" isn't a factor.
Other way around, the phonefag experience is coming to landline ISPs.
