My personal position on that meme war is that it's a a dying empire trying to bully a shittier nation in the context of a cold war against another shitty dying empire. I have no sympathy to Russia and no sympathy to Ukraine, and no sympathy to NATO, I really couldn't care less about this shit.
But everyone around me start to lose their shit. I never saw this in my lifetime. They are actually going hysterical, psychotic in a medical sense. Even during the beggining of COVID when we thought the meme flu could be deadly and dangerous I didn't see such a global panick. Then I watch the news and understood. The level of fearmongering and propaganda make me fear for the worse. To all the meme stories of russian killing civilians to now them being alledgedly psychos who start fires near nuclear powerplants, which according to most nuclear expert was fucking safe, it's clear that they want to put NPC in a state of panick, hate and fear such that they will accept anything, including the possibility a full blown war with Russia.

What it is is a geopolitical war NEEDED to be done for the defence of russia. If russia did not invade them by now, they would have turned into a NATO state, with NATO right neighbouring russia, one little incident at a border or whatever could then turn into a massive russia VS NATO war, WW3. It may not seem that it is in defence because russia started the more recent act of aggression, but this war has been going on for 8 or so years and only now when the time is nearly up ready for Ukraine to join NATO have the openly attacked. I kind of feel sorry for the russians as they clearly did not want this, Ukraine is their own people really as they are soviet block countries.
Russia clearly does not want to destroy the infastructure so they are not bombarding the country, they want to annex/occupy and I imagine turn the west ukraine into a massive military installation with ukraine being a military area in defence of russia itself. This is all exacerbated by US/NATO installing bases closer and closer to russia borders, middle east for eg and if reports are true, infrastructure in Ukraine itself, biolabs for eg
