But yeah, modern body armor has really be the cause of too much weight for the modern solder IMO. It's just too damn heavy and takes up too large of a percentage of what a human can carry. I almost wonder if it would be better to use polymer body armor for conventional warfare. Back when the russians were primarily using 7.62x39 it would've been sufficient, especially at longer range. In street fighting like in Iraq where you're either walking around waiting to get shot at or busting down doors and walking into ambushes, I wouldn't want to walk around without ceramic plates, but it slows you down so much you're like a turtle otherwise. You have 30-35lbs with body armor, 3-5+lbs on your head (helmet + nods + accessories), and then roughly 10lbs for your weapon + attachments. That's 50lbs of gear already, excluding ammunition, radio, medical kit, kneepads, water, batteries, and whatever else I'm forgetting. This is just your basic kit for going into combat. If you're patrolling anywhere and need to carry food for days along with a bedroll, sleeping bag, cold weather gear, etc. it gets even worse. I know our military is looking at weight reduction seriously but they can never seem to overcome the urge that others in the military have for adding more weight (who wants to fight without night vision, body armor, a radio, food+water, etc?) Maybe exoskeletons will solve the problem, lol
