We put some 3 million German "disarmed enemy forces", totally not prisoners of war subject to the Geneva conventions, into labor and STARVATION camps without any shelter but the holes they dug in the dirt. 1 million German fighting men died this way.
I wish they could have been on the Eastern front instead. At least that way they'd have a chance to find food.
Also, with American help, morale would turn around because a chance of victory would be possible. If you put a rat in a bucket of water, it will try to swim for 15 minutes before giving up and drowning. If you save the rat once and put it back in, it will then swim for 3 days thinking if it just holds out, the hand will save it.
