China has seemingly offered to mediate ceasefire negotiations between Ukraine and Russia amid its strongest comments yet over the conflict.
A statement from Beijing yesterday said: 'Ukraine is willing to strengthen communications with China and looks forward to China playing a role in realising a ceasefire.'
Chinese authorities added they are 'extremely concerned about the harm to civilians' amid the fighting.

Except this is not what China is all about.
Yes, ceasefire is better for the BRI and business, but overall Russia needs to be supported and China has repeatedly voiced understanding over Russia's reasons for launching the invasion.
They themselves always warn the US not to push their bases and military alliances near their shores, not just in Taiwan but also with THAAD deployments in South Korea and globohomo color revolutions in Thailand and Myanmar.
There will be no Chinese backstabbing of Russia. They deeply understand that if Russia fails, they are next in the crosshairs of the US.
America is failing to do much of anything about Ukraine so yes, that's what China is after. The question is if Putin is hellbent on getting Ukraine no matter what, and at this point it might be the end of Russia.

If that was the case we would be seeing near US levels of carpet bombing to absolutely obliterate every resistance.
The problem with that is Putin's narrative was that Russia would be greeted as liberators and have their new rule passively accepted. That has clearly not happened.
So if Russia has to destroy the whole country to 'win' this war then it becomes a phyrric victory because it will result in a years long insurgency at the very least. And I also think if Russia starts carpet bombing then the conflict will inevitably spill over and cause NATO to become involved (NATO already said a cyberattack that impacts a NATO state would invoke article 5 for example).

They can still probably compromise with a east and west division of Ukraine. When the atrocities Ukraine fascists committed in East Ukraine which is very high in Russians ethnicity start to surface, people over there will want to join and form the land bridge needed to secure Crimea, the east shale deposits and the black sea deposits.
But Putin will not settle for this easily, he will try to take the government down first, that where he may fall for the West's trap and commit to a new Afghanistan.
