After Ukraine bombed a kindergarten, Russia demanded a 3rd party investigate to where the UN/Nato refused, and ended up just having Ukraine blame Russia instead.

Russia has slowly been standing up to try and get back some of the Soviet power and ukraine becoming stable and EU aligned would neuter it forever. His only choice was attack or give up the Russian empire dream and since he failed to modernize the country before and is stuck as a strongarm he's pigeonholed into this response.
Like yeah, on face value it sounds stupid but you must understand their policy. Russia vs the west is not like France vs Germany or other smaller more neutral countries.
