No sane person thinks Ukraine will win. However it's become obvious that Putin has been reduced to a handful of long-term options for the region, considering the goal appears to be setting up a Pro-Russian government:
1. Depopulate Ukraine via an extended brutal occupation, therefore dodging the problem of an uncompliant populous.
2. Control Ukraine via a long-term heavy occupation, therefore expending resources to control the uncompliant populous
3. Create a break away state in the Russia Majority areas.
The third is less of an option because the Russia Majority areas don't include the headwaters of the river Russia needs to solve their drought problem in Crimea. The issue is that Ukraine has shown that it's going to devolve into a meat grinder of insurgents supported by western glowies, and if Russia looks away for a moment what ever Pro-Russian government they install is just gonna get overthrown again, like last time.

the water problem in Crimea was largely because the Ukrainians were damming upriver, and that has been destroyed by airstrikes so the Crimea water situation should start to improve soon

It was only possible because other nations did it at the same time and emboldened each other, and because Ukraine punched Russias nose so bloody Russia is proven a paper tiger. Before this conflict not in anybodys wildest dreams would they have imagined that a politician in Finland would openly consider joining Nato.
