Gog and Magog, in the Hebrew Bible, the prophesied invader of Israel and the land from which he comes, respectively; or, in the Christian Scriptures (New Testament), evil forces opposed to the people of God.

Iconic American televangelist Pat Robertson - who famously predicted an asteroid would hit the Earth after Donald Trump was reelected in 2020 - came out of retirement Monday to say Russian President Vladimir Putin was being 'compelled by God' to invade Ukraine.

'I think you can say, well, Putin's out of his mind,' Robertson, 91, said during a special appearance on his old show, the Christian Broadcasting Network's The 700 Club, of the Russian president's decision to invade the neighboring nation.

'And yes, maybe so,' the aging voice of conservative Christianity - who boasts an estimated net worth between $200m and $1 billion, according to the Observer - conceded.

'But at the same time, he's being compelled by God.'

Televangelist Pat Robertson, 91, came out of retirement Monday to say Russian President Vladimir Putin was being 'compelled by God' to invade Ukraine

Robertson, who called it quits on a sixty-year career as the head - and founder - of the Christian broadcasting giant in October, spoke to the camera as he told the show's roughly 1million daily viewers that Ukraine is simply a 'staging area' for an even greater, 'End of Times' battle that will eventually take place in Israel.

'He went into Ukraine, but that wasn't his goal. His goal was to move against Israel, ultimately,' the Christian commentator said, citing the Book of Ezekiel as he prophesized nations eventually aligning with Russia to rise up against the Middle-Eastern nation, in a biblical battle that would conclude with Armageddon.

He urged his viewers to 'read your Bible' before the catastrophic event, because 'it's coming to pass.'

The founder of the Christian Broadcasting Network made the comments during a special appearance on the network's The 700 Club Monday, saying the Russian president was destined to bring about the 'End of Times, prophesied in the Bible

Referring to a world map, Robertson pointed to a crucial 'choke point' near nearby nations Bulgaria, Turkey, and Greece, and posited as to why Russia might want to control that area.

'And there is the land that is set up in Ezekiel 38, and you see how Ukraine is key because you see the land bridge between Bulgaria, Greece and Turkey,' Robertson noted.

He added that Muslim nations, like Turkey, would join up with Putin in the prophesized conquest of Ukraine and Israel.

Robertson previously served as the host of The 700 Club, which draws in 1million viewers daily, for more than fifty years

'He will link up with Turkey across the little [land] bridge, and they will come together,' Robert said, pointing to the map.

'And then, you look down into North Sudan, you've got a Muslim country down there, and there they all are. Persia, of course, is Iran.'

He then declared: 'And all of that area is going to be mobilized against Israel in the latter days,' adding that the subsequent 'End of Times' Armageddon event - which of course would result in the world being wiped out - would be God's way of saying, 'I am going to deal with it.'

Conservative broadcasting giant famously said in 2020 that an asteroid would hit the Earth five year after Donald Trump was reelected

Turkey has not backed or expressed plans to join in on Russia's invasion, and has asserted its support for Ukraine.

The prediction from the elderly broadcaster is just the latest a series of so-far-unfulfilled prophecies forecasting the end of the world, many made in in his old age.

In 1976, the CBN talking head predicted that 'there is going to be a judgment on the world' that would result in its end in 1982.

In his 1990 book, The New Millennium, Robertson again asserted that the world would be destroyed on April 29, 2007, USA Today reported at the time.

In 2006, he predicted the Pacific Northwest would be devastated by a tsunami, and that 'mass killings' would be unleashed in America in 2007.

None of the events ever came to pass.

Robertson, pictured here in 1988, served as the voice of conservative Christianity during a six decade career at the broadcasting giant

Most famously, perhaps, Robertson predicted that an asteroid would destroy the earth five years after President Donald Trump won his ill-fated re-election bid in 2020.

So far, that prediction too seems to have also been a bust.

Months before he retired, an aging Robertson faced backlash for calling 'critical race theory' a 'monstrous evil' during a June broadcast of The 700 Club.

The commentator also came under fire in his later years for waging what he viewed as a religious war against the LGBTQ community, which led to him coming under even more scrutiny.

Eventually, in October, Robertson announced during Friday airing of The 700 Club that he would be stepping down as host of the CBN's flagship program, 60 years to the day from when he founded the company in 1961 out of his home state of Virginia.

Longtime 700 Club host Robertson announced in October on-air that it would be his last appearance on the program

Robertson has long been a powerful figure in conservative Christianity, and even ran unsuccessfully president in 1988 (seen above), seeking to ban pornography and amend the Constitution to require a balanced federal budget

Television evangelist and conservative political activist Pat Robertson poses in the control room for his 700 Club TV show in 1985, Robertson's CBN started airing on October 1, 1961

'Today's show will be my final as host of the 700 Club,' Robertson said at the time, vowing to return from time to time if he has a 'revelation' he needs to share.

'I thank God for everyone that's been involved. And I want to thank all of you,' he said.

Robertson's son Gordon since has taken over as the program's full-time host.

Robertson has long been a powerful figure in conservative Christianity, and even ran unsuccessfully president in 1988, seeking the Republican nomination in a longshot bid against incumbent George H.W. Bush.

Robertson, aside from this singular appearance, has stepped away from broadcasting, now exclusively teaching students at Regent University, which he founded in 1977.

Gog and Magog are the prophetic names given in the scriptures to that combination of nations which will fight against the purposes of the Lord on two separate and future occasions:

1. At the time of and incident to the second coming of the Lord and the ushering in of the millennial era; and

2. At the end of the Millennium, plus a little season, when the final overthrow of evil and the destruction of the wicked shall take place.

The Lord has not revealed who the nations are, but his prophets have described, in general terms, what they will do in the great battles that shall hereafter be fought.

Because we are living in the last days, immediately preceding the second coming of the Lord, our chief interest in Gog and Magog centers in the pre-millennial war. The following quotation summarizes what is to take place:

“Our Lord is to come again in the midst of the battle of Armageddon, or in other words during the course of the great war between Israel and Gog and Magog. At the Second Coming all the nations of the earth are to be engaged in battle, and the fighting is to be in progress in the area of Jerusalem and Armageddon. (Zech. 11; Zech. 12; Zech. 13; Rev. 16:14–21.) The prophecies do not name the modern nations which will be fighting for and against Israel, but the designation Gog and Magog is given to the combination of nations which will seek to overthrow and destroy the remnant of the Lord’s chosen seed.

“The 38th and 39th chapters of Ezekiel [Ezek. 38; Ezek. 39] record considerable prophetic detail relative to this great war. It should be noted that it is to take place ‘in the latter years’; that it will be fought in the ‘mountains of Israel’ against those who have been gathered to the land of their ancient inheritance; that the land of Israel shall be relatively unprotected, a ‘land of unwalled villages’; that Gog and Magog shall come ‘out of the north parts’ in such numbers as ‘to cover the land’ as a cloud; that the Lord will then come, and all men shall shake at his presence; that there will be such an earthquake as has never before been known, which will throw down the mountains; that there will be pestilence, blood, fire, and brimstone descend upon the armies; that the forces of Gog and Magog will be destroyed upon the mountains of Israel; that the Supper of the Great God shall then take place as the beasts and fowls eat the flesh and drink the blood of the fallen ones (Rev. 19:17–18; D&C 29:18–21); and that the house of Israel will be seven months burying the dead and seven years burning the discarded weapons of war.

“In the light of all this and much more that is prophetically foretold about the final great battles in the holy land, is it any wonder that those who are scripturally informed and spiritually enlightened watch world events with great interest as troubles continue to foment in Palestine, Egypt, and the Near East?” (Mormon Doctrine [Bookcraft, 1966], 2nd ed., pp. 324–25.)

The second and final great war involving Gog and Magog is referred to by John in Revelation 20:7–9 [Rev. 20:7–9] and by the Lord in Doctrine and Covenants 88:111–116 [D&C 88:111–116].

One final word: When considering items of this sort, it is exceedingly important to stay close to the revealed word and not stray off into those speculative realms that engender strife and do not increase faith in our hearts.

Implications for Moldova

The Republic of Moldova, which today hosts some 70,000 Ukrainian refugees, is a former Soviet Union country with a pro-EU political orientation. The country’s leadership immediately condemned Russia’s actions as a grave violation of international law. The invasion has prompted heightened concerns in Moldova not only over the humanitarian situation in relation to refugees, but also due to Transnistria, the Russian-backed breakaway region on the southwestern border of Ukraine.

Although the conflict over Transnistria is considered to be ‘frozen’, the territory on the left bank of the Dniester river hosts Russian troops and the region is not controlled by the Moldovan authorities in Chisinau. Transnistria is also home to the village of Cobasna, where the largest ammunition depot in Eastern Europe is located.

Putin’s actions have made clear that the annexation of Crimea was simply the first stage of his Novorossiya project. The next targets include the Ukrainian cities of Donetsk, Luhansk, Kharkiv, Dnipro, Zaporizhia, Kherson, Mykolaiv, and Odessa. Putin would no doubt like to ultimately link the Donbas region and the Transnistrian region through Kherson, Mykolaiv and Odessa.

If a puppet regime is installed in Ukraine, then the domino effect would be felt in Moldova. Putin would essentially dominate the entire northern coast of the Black Sea and control a vast territory, stretching from the current western borders of Russia to the borders of Romania and Moldova, through Transnistria, which is already conveniently located for Russia. It is for good reason that politicians in the Moldovan capital are now watching anxiously to see how the conflict develops.

When the thousand years are over, Satan will be released from his prison and will go out to deceive the nations in the four corners of the Earth—Gog and Magog—and to gather them for battle. In number they are like the sand on the seashore.

"Son of man, direct your face against Gog, of the land of Magog, the prince, leader of Meshech and Tubal, and prophesy concerning him. Say: Thus said the Lord: Behold, I am against you, Gog, the prince, leader of Meshech and Tubal ... Persia, Cush and Put will be with you ... also Gomer with all its troops, and Beth Togarmah from the far north with all its troops—the many nations with you."

You have a right to perform your prescribed duty, but you are not entitled to the fruits of actions.

Two chapters of the Quran, Al Kahf and Al-Anbiya, discuss Gog and Magog. In the Quran Yajuj and Majuj (Gog and Magog) are suppressed by Dhul-Qarnayn "the two-horned one (traditionally regarded to be Alexander the Great.)"[5] Dhul-Qarnayn, having journeyed to the ends of the world, meets "a people who scarcely understood a word" who seek his help in building a barrier that will separate them from the people of Yajuj and Majuj who "do great mischief on earth". He agrees to build it for them, but warns that when the time comes (Last Age), Allah will remove the barrier.

The early Muslim traditions were summarised by Zakariya al-Qazwini (d. 1283) in two popular works called the Cosmography and the Geography. Gog and Magog, he says, live near to the sea that encircles the Earth and can be counted only by God; this sea is claimed to be the Caspian sea, Black sea or the Sea of Azov. They are human, but only half the height of a normal man, with small eyes almost like the mongols, with claws instead of nails, and a hairy tail and huge hairy ears which they use as mattress and cover for sleeping.[46] They dig into their wall each day until they almost break through. They break for the night saying, "Tomorrow we will finish", but each night God restores it. Then one day, as they stop digging for the night, one will say, "Tomorrow we will finish, God Willing", and in the morning, it is not restored as with everything night. When they do break through, they will be so numerous that, "Their vanguard is in Syria and their rear in Khorasan".[47]

Truth Alone Triumphs

Magog is a land “in the far north,” from Israel’s point of view (Ezekiel 38:15; 39:2). Most Bible commentators interpret “Magog” as Russia—and, indeed, Russia is straight north of Israel, all the way up to the Arctic Circle. According to this view, “Rosh” is a reference to Russia, “Meshek” is either Moscow or the people north of the Black Sea (the area of southern Russia and Ukraine), and “Tubal,” which is always listed with Meshek in Scripture, is identified as a city in Siberia or an area in central Turkey.

Others see “Magog” as a general term used in Ezekiel’s day to identify barbarians living near the Black and Caspian Seas. Regardless of the exact locations of Magog, Tubal, and Meshek, there is no doubt that the general area includes portions of Russia and the former Soviet Union, and possibly some Arab countries.

So, yes, the Bible does mention Russia, although not by that name, in connection with the end times. Ezekiel 38—39 definitely refer to a nation coming from northern Asia to attack Israel. After the Cold War, Russia lost its superpower status, making the fulfillment of Ezekiel’s prophecy seem unlikely in some people’s eyes. However, recent events have shown that Russia is gaining strength, and many believe that the invasion of Ukraine is just a first step in Russia’s plan to restore its dominance in that hemisphere. It is also interesting to note that, in the Soviet era, Moscow was solidly aligned with several Muslim countries in opposition to Israel. Since the breakup of the Soviet Union, Russia has continued to make overtures to the Muslim world.

.

According to the Bible, there will come a time when Russia, in alliance with several other countries, will amass a huge army against Israel, with a view to plunder the Jews’ land. The nations aligned with Russia for this military endeavor are Persia (modern-day Iran), Put (modern-day Libya), Cush (modern-day Sudan), Gomer (part of modern-day Turkey), and Beth Togarmah (Armenia). Most of these nations are currently militant Islamic states with an express hatred of Israel. Ezekiel says that, when the aggressors move against Israel, a few other nations (“Sheba and Dedan and the merchants of Tarshish”) will remonstrate, as will “all her villages”—possibly colonies (Ezekiel 38:13). Sheba and Dedan are associated with areas of northern Africa. Tarshish could be a reference to Spain (which colonized much of South America), Britain (which colonized the United States), or somewhere in eastern Africa. The objections to Magog’s aggression will fall on deaf ears, however, and the invasion will continue

Checked, I’ll take the numbers as a sign you’re right

>According to the Bible, there will come a time when Russia, in alliance with several other countries, will amass a huge army against Israel, with a view to plunder the Jews’ land.
