A military column, unopposed, can only go as fast as half the top speed of its slowest vehicle (tracked vehicles averaging 40 kph), half because of wave effects on long formations, since vehicles cannot be allowed to become isolated due to cumulative speed differences. Furthermore, a column has to stop aome every two hours because of human reasons, and tracked vehicles have a very limited range between track maintenance/adjustment jobs.
Armies need supplies, columns go everywhere they go.
The takeaway: an unopposed army entering uncontrolled territory without being contested cannot cover more than 100 km a day on average. Ukraine is the size of Texas, and while ineffective, they *are* putting up resistance. Both Poland and Iraq took over a month, and here we have one Russia vs a country that's being supported

Historically, that's exactly what they did most of the time. It ain't always easy though: seaside demands ships to blockade, sneaky tunnels are sneaky, if you want to conquer a whole country doing it via siege was too slow and the enemy had lots of opportunities to get you removed.
