The point is, Russia doesn't want to completely change Ukrainian culture, or obliterate the Ukrainian lands with shock&awe terror bombings, or turn Pashtun goatherders into LGBTQI*A activists with a degree from Berkeley. Their goal is to install a puppet like Yanukovych, make his puppet sign a binding agreement that renounces Crimea and promises military neutrality, and then fuck off back to Russia. Russians don't do modern warfare like Americans, you'd know if you followed the war in Syria. They have a mission, once they accomplish or fail the mission, the mission is over and they go home. Americans somehow try to create a new situation from their new position, that's what led Iraq and Afghanistan to disaster. Zapping Saddam was not enough, Iraqis had to learn free trade and Jeffersonian democracy. Chasing Osama away from Afghanistan was not enough, Afghans had to become a modern state that respected women and minorities, and so on.
