Dragon, the capsule that's been re-supplying the US's for almost a decade, and the only one currently rated for human spaceflight, has thrusters on it. It's also not difficult to sent up a slightly modified version with larger fuel tanks, resonance dampeners so the station doesn't oscillate under thrust, etc. It would be another day at the office for spacex. It's not hard to add a little thrust, and they've never failed to get there safely before. Eesa and Boeing and jaxa can likely achieve the same thing (certainly technically) but spacex isn't bogged down by red tape.

Pretty much just research. They have bio labs, animal experiments, radiation experiments, they are trying to grow crops in zero g, manufacturing techniques, chemistry, and the astronauts themselves are experiments, with their degradation in zero g being one of the biggest hurdles to overcome rn.
