there wouldn't be this invasion now if they didn't try to join (or to put it more accurately, if the USA didn't try to drag them in).
Finland isn't in NATO either, and until this current war had no intention of joining. Ukraine could have chosen the Finland-path, as was advocated by people like Henry Kissenger (pic related) and many others.
Not only did post USSR Russia show no signs of invading Finland, it never showed any signs of wanting to invade Ukraine until after 2014. Dragging Ukraine into NATO was unnecessary and was always going to provoke Moscow.
Germany and France understood this, which is why they were against it at the Bucharest NATO Summit in 2008.

you're probably some ukrainian immigrant, here's my thoughts on it. The conflict just needs to end, more sensible minds would have just backed away from Ukraine and that includes NATO encroachment.

If Ukraine thought that the only way to improve their economy was to join NATO, then they are fed a sick lie. Putin had a reasonable argument to protest any motion for Ukraine's inclusion into NATO but he blew the gun and invaded a sovereign country, worst, he invaded a European country. It should never have happened. I side with the Ukrainians purely because they were invaded but I do not relish or lionize what is happening in Ukraine. It is a sad state of affairs for anyone who cares about Europe and its people.
