They mark from where they came, Belarus or Crimea etc, it's also used to identify allied troops because Ukrainians have similar equipment. Im sure you have noticed that the soldier also use different color bands just for that

Yeah, well when your superior officers are threatening to shoot you I don't think they really care. Most of these soldiers are lied to and thrown into the fray without even knowing where they'll end up or how to replenish depleted resources like fuel and ammunition. They have very minimal combat experience and have never been in real time combat scenarios. Compared to our military Russia looks like a 3rd world pansies.
