Such is the nature of all living things. Societies, cultures, nations; these are all complex biological organisms. Nobody should be aiming to not do grand things because they will at some point rot away. A pan-European Commonwealth that integrates the vast material and human capital in economic terms, but respects the right of individual countries to determine cultural and social concerns would exist as the greatest bulwark against invasion from outside, to prevent brother wars, and stop (((special interests))) from playing one group of Europeans against each other.

I'm not sure if it's possible. Life in all of it's forms and organizations is so complex that any attempt by humanity to reign it in will result in failure. The Soviet Union's economy was an economic experiment, where a government tried to manage every input and output in the economy directly, and economics is relatively simplistic compared to sociology in general (I would argue that Economics is just applied material sociology, but whatever), with the end result being complete mismanagement and eventual collapse. Every species that has been the apex predator of their age has eventually become prey, and while I don't know if that will happen to humanity or not, the basic idea of a powerful state eventually becoming outdated and falling apart, may very well be inevitable. Human history paints a clear picture of both mass social engineering techniques and forceful empire building eventually resulting in a collapse.
That, of course, doesn't mean we shouldn't try.
