If you want a tl;dr: >Russia only wants to replace Ukraine’s pro-US/NATO government with a pro-Russia government. The longer version of this is that Russia has learned from the US’s failures over the past 20 years and is fighting a very “clean” war in which there are absolutely minimal civilian casualties. When the US invaded Iraq and Afghanistan it shock and awed the infrastructure, inspired local militias to form, destabilized the entire power structure that maintained peace and was left with a nightmare of insurgencies and eventual civil wars. Russia doesn’t want to deal with a similar situation. It turns out that nation building is harder than everyone thought, so if you want to get what you want using force, you have to leave the nation intact and simply replace the people who are in power.
Keeping this short, Russia is going to encircle cities and not enter them. Why? Because as soon as your armored column is in a city it starts taking fire from high-rises with civilians in them. This means you can either shoot the buildings full of civilians to protect yourself, or you can just sit there and eat the bullets. It’s very simple. So, if you are Russia and you don’t want to kill a bunch of civilians and inspire an insurgency, you stay out of heavily populated areas (cities) and hold the area around them. Once the cities run out of supplies, you offer aid to the citizens and play Mr. GoodGuy. Eventually the citizens get sick of the living conditions and give up their former leaders because they really don’t care that much about politics in the first place. You now curate an election and make sure the people elected are pro-Russia, and your objective is accomplished. Simple, clean and easy.
Don’t expect crazy firefights and mass destruction. These are the opposite of things Russia wants to do because then they have to deal with rebuilding. Expect Boring.
