It's like the soccer madness that washes over the world every so often, very little of it is rooted in reality.

You should keep in mind that the word "su[erpower" is literally a propagand a construct; all great empires have lost and withered, the greatest threat to any of them is being blinded to the downsides of their own size.
For military power that is not much different, the moment any army starts focussing on numbers, whether of men or of machines, well you can be certain that their prime has long since passed. And that their defeat is often only postponed by the initmidation their past glories can still leverage for them in the present.
