It's very simple. Russia wants to knock Ukraine out of the natural gas market. The millions of USD funneled into the Ukraine by the US and EU to "support democracy" and then all the bullshit Russia has done since has all been after the discover of natural gas reserves in Ukraine and talks with Exxon Mobil, Chevron, and Shell to exploit it. The EU was setting Ukraine up to provide natural gas to meet their climate goals without funding the Russian war machine. Putin wasn't having it so he dedicated the last decade to utterly destroying Ukraine.

Ukraine has also huge amounts if oil, gas, lithium, coal and 45 million slavic white people. Ukraine is pure gold to Sino-Rus alliance. After Ukraine Poland is next. If Poland fall it gives direct access to Germany and EU and Russia becomes superpower.
