Russia doesn't have the economy or the military industrial infrastructure to sustain a long war. They're already going all in with poorly equipped reservists and old hardware to have overwhelming numbers, sooner or later a significant proportion of the active force they've committed needs to stand down.
Luckily for Russia they still have a decent force on standby, but its just a question of how many cities Russia can capture and how far west they can control before they start to have logistics issues.

Even at this point it'd become a bigger drain on Russia than Iraq was on the US.

thats because they aint in it for a complete occupation, russians strategy was always going into war with the least minimal effort, thats why no drones or modern tanks are being used. they dont even have 100k men in ukraine rn and still managed to already take the biggest cities and surround ukraine. They want to keep crimea and the eastern parts and let ukraine be their own little neutral shithole that doesnt join nato. But thats just my opinion

If your plan for the war has a "And the other guys don't shoot back :)" step, it's not a great plan.

Tactically, he was tried to capture Kyiv on day one, when even the US vs Iraq it took us a few weeks to take Baghdad because we wanted to make sure our logistics are all set up. Putin didn't do any prepwork because he thought the war would be over in a few hours, so he's not configured to keep the troops going. The longer Ukraine holds out, the worse things are for Russia, and that's causing the Russians to, um, rush, and they're being sloppy.
