If you consider the 'homo' in globohomo to be homogenization then being incorporated into a Russian superstate is hardly preserving your unique identity either. Countries like Ukraine, Poland and Estonia have had to walk a tightrope between imperial powers for a long time. Back in the day you could still meet people who essentially had to choose between joining the Waffen SS or the Soviet army. I think the question is which scenario gives you the most autonomy to pursue your own utlimate aims.
