Depends on what better is. Were we technologically as advanced as the west? No. Were we culturally advanced? Yup.

The British focused on one thing when they maneuvered (yes, maneuvered - they never had the numbers to hold India down), to completely decimate the Indian economy. Anglos were great at destroying the Indian economy. They used a simple trick - force Indians to sell them raw materials at a low price, and then force them to buy finished goods from the British.

There is one other place in the world that employs the same form of economy to this day - West Virginia. The coal companies in WV give you coupons that are essentially cash - but you can only buy from select stores - which are owned by the coal companies.

So no. I don't know if we were better under the British. But I do know our entire economy and culture was destroyed by the Anglos - and they did it for a reason - to shift the economic hub of the world to the U.S.
