It is in Russia's best interests for Ukraine to be captured intact. The Russian air force could wipe out the civilian infrastructure and obliterate the Ukrainian army, but why would they? What would Russia gain from creating a an ungovernable shithole on their own doorstep?

yes. Since XVIth century the Russian state view on "ukrainians" was that only the top (often considered non rus) of the society was anti russian, mostly for particular reasons, while the wider population was either pro rus or at worse didn't care who was their governing body.
