Why aren’t people mad at NATO for their part in causing the Russia/Ukraine conflict?
Putin invaded because he doesn’t want Ukraine to join NATO. He doesn’t want NATO setting up missiles and weapons on the Russian border. This is just what happened during the Cold War with the Soviets setting up in Cuba and America responding because they didn’t want their enemy to set up shop close to their border. Putin is defending his country against his enemy, NATO and the west, from setting up a military presence on his border. If NATO literally said to Putin that they will stay away from Ukraine and will not get involved then Putin wouldn’t have invaded. They forced him to make a decision that they knew would hurt him and Russia, let NATO set up on the Russian border or force him to take control of Ukraine before NATO do. It’s a loose loose for Putin and a win win for NATO. They played the game of geopolitical chess and won against Putin.
This whole situation could have been avoided with diplomacy from NATO representatives and Russia. What am I missing here?

There's a vague argument that the west could've done more to help Ukraine develop as a neutral party that Russia could've felt secure with. The problem is that when Putin pistolwhipped the democratically elected president to drop his platform to appease russia Ukraine went mad.
The reality is that Russia was once a superpower and now they heavily rely on the inherited soviet influence sphere + nukes and they want to get the most leverage out of that threat of violence. Could NATO have conceded Ukraine to be a bitch puppet for Russia? Sure. Maybe there was a way to make it not bad. But the way Russia acts is a huge problem and one you can't solve with convenient warfare. Sure, you have to respect the retard schizo with a gun in the room but are you really gonna let him keep molesting more and more people?

But yes it's true. Putin is an old warlord and the west has this "we are over this" kind of mentality and I think most of them thought they could act stern and Putin would come to his senses and are now surprised Putin is actually that serious.

You missed the fact that Western diplomacy is completely retarded.
Russia (and China, etc.) are operating based on the old models: "this is our stuff, this is their stuff, we want this, we will have to give that in exchange, we might need to protect that, etc." Realpolitik.
The West is driven by financial profits (jews) with a justification for wars based on moral superiority (carried out by whites serving jews; shabbos goys): "this is about human rights, democracy, etc.".
