Or them losing ukraine could set pretense for that region fully joining europe and further the wests subversion of their nationalists communities. Both sides want to rid that region of nationalism and borders. The only difference is russia wants it to be in their favor and the west in theirs.

I mean it really depends on the city. Kiev isn't even that big, it's just 3,000,000 people, which means it's about 10 times larger than Grozny. It also has 20+ skyscrapers and has dozens of thousands of defenders. The entire Russian invasion force is about 150,000 men.

I'd say that given the size of modern militaries, megacities are pretty much unassailable and can't be controlled. Obviously, you can inflict property damage and starve them out, but you can't just move in and take/control them.

It's a known military problem that doesn't really have a solution.
