I've come to the conclusion that the "Russia threat" was insanely exaggerated all these years.
- They have several problems with logistics and supply, with troops literally surrendering for food and fuel.
-- It's more aggravating that this is happening when they're fighting next to their borders.
- The whole "Russia is a drone super power" was a complete myth. Even the Azerbaijani used drones much better than them and suicide drone swarms (AKA "loitering munition") like China, Israel and the US have are nowhere to be seen.
- They keep getting troops captured because they're having organizational nightmares so a lot of forward units constantly split off. Compare that to the Americans in Iraq where not a single unit advanced without having three other units covering them to fallback.
Conclusion: only nukes make them relevant as a power, but nukes are deterrence weapons, they cannot even use them.
US loses Iraq after 20 years. US loses Afghanistan after 20 years. Yet, Russia wins in Syria in less than 10 years even with the opposition receiving assistance from the US.
I think Russia is just avoiding using long range artillery and airstrikes. They are trying to invade with a soft touch. They are tying to avoid casualties on both side and after the government is toppled their prisoners will be released anyways.
