Simple. Majority of the Russian soldiers were lied to and said they were going on a training, so they were completely unprepared for war. Their morale is extremely low. They are tired and want to go home.

There's good reason based on everything he's done and the specific words he used in his speech, that he was getting poorly advised on pro-Russia support. He's not stupid but he is opportunistic; had he been given bad information on the amount of pro-Russian sympathy in Ukraine, it would explain the over-fundamentalist vocabulary and rhetoric as well as the confidence in how long it would take.
Now imagine how fucking mad they'll be when they find out Russia has been kicked out of the football league. I'm sure they still have access to outside information, and are probably checking it regularly and seeing Russia getting booted out of everything because of the mission they are currently taking part in.
