I think that some here are mistaken and consider Russia a nationalistic state. First, a brief description:
Putin's Russian is multicultural (but conservative) anti-american dictatorship with oligarchic economy the basis of which is in semi-state monopolies following the will of the government.
Why Russia is multiculturalistic? Because nationalism in Russia was banned in 2000s and almost all nationalists was imprisoned in 2010s. Some leaders were imprisoned, some were killed, some found refuge in Ukraine.
An important thing that is not reflected in the English language: In English you have commod word "Russian", but in Russia we have two different words for Russian-citizen people ("poccиянe") and Russian-ethnicity people (pyccкиe). The second is never used in mass-media and non-oficially banned. Ethnic minorities can call themselves by their nations names, but not Russians. Mass-media also are agressively propagandize the "дpyжбa нapoдoв" (international friendship) and anti-nationalism. In the same time, Russian nationalistic slogans like "pyccкий, нe пeй!" (Russian, don't drink alcohol!) and "Poccия для pyccких!" (Russia for Russians!) are banned by the government and you may be imprisoned for them.
On the other hand, Putin allows a huge number of immigrants into Russia (at least 14 millions, but the cherry on the cake is that we don't know how many illegals is in Russia) - mostly muslims from Central Asia.
Putin also provides softer living conditions for ethnic minorities (such as much more lighter sentences for the same crimes). In 2010 there was a Russian riots against this, when militia just released and let go the killer of a Russian football fan.
Despite all this a person who has never been in Russia may get an impression that Putin's Russia is nationalist or even white-supremisist country. In fact, what looks like nationalism to a Western layman in reality is just conservatism and multicultural-patriotism. NOT NATIONALISM.
