Not impossible. Radar and thermal tracking still require line-of-sight. If Ukrainian pilot knows his country's terrain well enough he could surprise and pop off a few missiles. Im sure Americans donated some dated radar jamming tech that still works against russian jalopy plane.

Radar does not require line of sight. Yes, they have to be in the radar's cone, but you can set them to have a pretty wide arc, so you're scanning a very large area of space. There are also off-boresight IR missiles that don't need line of sight, although not sure if Ukr/Russia would have those. US even has extreme off-boresight IRs that can get a lock via a helmet HUD.

One other thing that's important: Russia uses the GCI model of air combat. Planes usually have limited capability for spotting planes, but they have powerful ground based Radar that will communicate the location of targets to planes.
