The West didn't like this and helped destabilize the region in 2014 with the Ukrainian Revolution at which point Poroshenko was eventually 'elected' and forbade any military cooperation with Russia because he sided with the West.

Poroshenko also wanted to get Ukraine to join NATO which would put NATO-backed troops and weapons on Russia's borders. This pissed Putin off because he felt like the West helped illegally topple a legitimate government that was friendly to Russia.
