This is not the path Ukraine was on. They were rapidly being inducted into the Western fold. If Ukraine was truly neutral they wouldn't have wanted to join NATO in 2008 (before Russia ever invaded or annexed anything) and they wouldn't have said they need nukes last year.

Being within the western fold is self determination because they chose it via the vote. The western style is nowhere near as authoritarian as the Russian style, and therefore siding with the west is their best shot if they want anything other than being Russian.
NATO is a military alliance. Ofcourse they wanted to be in that military alliance, they keep getting invaded.
