US staged a literal neo-nazi coup in Ukraine in 2014, installing an anti-russian government that would steal gas and other resources through trade. The DPR and LPR have been constantly shelled since the coup and are pro-Russian. There was an agreement called the 'Minsk Protocol' between the Russian and Ukrainian govts to establish a DMZ, yet Ukraine did not uphold their side of the bargain. All-in-all this is about Russian border security.
