This ragtag force that's attacking Ukraine right now pretty much is the ENTIRE russian military might. Half of the troops are 18 year old conscripts who haven't even finished their training. Equipped with an ak and 3 magazines of ammunition.
Russian army might look good on paper, but war is expensive and those roughly 100 planes and helicopters that have been parttaking the invasion so far, likely are the majority of actual funtional aircrafts Russia has. - ofcourse, compared to something like Germany, with their 9 airworthy fighter jets, this is a lot, but as long as the west keeps supplying Ukraine, it wont be enough to gain full air superioroty. Also, they've already lost 1/5 of it so far.
Putin knows they can't afford a war of attrition against Ukraine, why they're desperetely trying to get it over with as quickly as possible, but so far, it doesn't seem to be working out too well.
There's no cavalry to come and back up Russian troops, while Ukraine is only ramping up.
There's a lot of Russian propaganada going around to make it seem like Russia is some sort of an unstoppable force, while it's not.

The Russian Air Force has great long-range detection devices, long-range SAMs and good Interceptors but severely lack modern (5th Gen) Fighters and lots of other stuff in all branches. Since most of their high-tech equipment is for defensive purposes and their military still lacks essential capabilities they are destined to lose any open conflict with NATO aka the US at this time while dealing heavy damage themselves.
But since the Ukraine is not worth an open conflict from western perspective anyway all of that doesn't matter right now.
