Taking chernobyl has two benefits I can think of
1) removed a potential dead man's dirty bomb. Russia can continue to invade through Belarus without having to worry about the sarcophagus getting blown up and irradiating the region
2) Russia now has a nuclear hostage that will force Ukraine supporting countries to think twice about confronting Russia. They can blow up the sarcophagus and irradiate the region
