Does someone want to explain to me how this does not turn into Afghanistan 2.0 for Russia?

What is Putin's endgame here? Get bogged down in an occupation he will just have to withdraw from?

Every dead white in Ukraine is an acceptable loss

I doubt he wants whole Ukraine and the eastern part is still rather favorable for him

they speak a similar language and look similar. harder to conquer something completely foreign.

No, this is his last gasp and legacy, he wants to contribute to the heritage of the Russian Empire.

Their hope is that they will quickly install a Russian-occupied government and then bring in an incredible amount of civil police force.

They are going to round up insurrectionists and purge them as fast as possible. Including, as always, academics, economists, policy specialists -- anybody who wears glasses and had something to say about resisting in the past or present.

This is meant to cause a chilling effect among separatist factions. If they keep the pressure on, they will cause Ukranians to leave or submit.

If they fail, there will be a prolonged insurrection and constant conflict. Their hope is to cut off the head and bleed all the capacity to resist out so that they aren't facing cellhpone IEDs on every corner in 30 days.

Why are so many retards comparing Ukraine and Taiwan to Afghanistan and Vietnam? Femboys (aka average male) in Ukraine and Taiwan do not smile at death like the Viet Cong and Taliban did.

This will be even worse than Vanilla Afghanistan for them because all the world will turn against russia in the next weeks mark my words
There is not a single comparable conflict since WW2 that went well for the invader
Korea, Vietnam, Afghanistan, Iraq etc

If the objective really is to just protect the two separatist regions as they claim, then the end goal is breaking Kiev's back, taking everything they can, and then leaving Ukraine's body for Europe to pick back up once they're sure the two new republics can stand on their own.
If they go for regime change, then yea it'll be a long drawn out mess with the goal of creating a Russia-allied Ukraine that is resistant to US influences, another vassal on the border between NATO and Russia.

regime change

Why would he invade from Belarus then?

Ukrainians are Slavs and it isn't even remotely the same situation.

There're no mountains in ukraine

And Crimea

Russian don't actually hate the ukrainians. But mostly you the evil muttoids that started to play war games in their garden. Stop creating problems in europe you fat fuck

Ukraine is on Russia's doorstep and not full of mountain ghosts

ukrainian terrain comprised of nothing but plains and wheat fields. when you look at afghanistan it is one of the most mointainous countries. vietnam is notorious for its green inferno aka jungle. it's ogre

Guerrilla warfare is much more difficult in cities and developed countries.

Ukrainians and Russians are not interchangeable with Afghans and Americans. This is the kind of idea neocons come up with because they don't know the history of the countries they're playing with and think every nation is either a western economic zone in all but name or a dictatorship with no other features. Pretty much if the Russians take Kiev and the Ukrainian army stands down, that's it, there won't be anything else.

>the two new republics can stand on their own
You didn't watch Sergei? He spoiled the ending. It will be annexed into Russia.

Ukranians aren't going to be blowing themselves up at checkpoints and/or setting up IEDs for Russian convoys

Honestly Russia is fucked if Ukraine keeps this up. Good luck Russia continuing this boon doggle while going through a fucking financial collapse. The last time this happened the Soviet Union fell apart.

He wants to push hard and win as much as he can before things bog down, then negotiate. Some occupied areas will be returned to Ukraine in return for political concessions. This way Russia can achieve strategic goals without having to engage in a state building project like America always tries to do.

Fucking kikes are everywhere

Does anyone think the breakaway republics aren't Bear Republics a la California? Their entire formation is pretty much just a stepping stone to getting annexed.

Yeah but Ukrainians are neither Muslim nor Communist. They have nothing to fight tooth and nail for.

A strong percentage of the Ukraine population wants Russia to be there, as opposed to Afghans hating everyone, including other Afghans.

Based. The most entertaining situation would be that Ukrain becomes Russia's military quagmire and we get videos of Russian BTRs being blown up like it's the early 00s all over again and all the Chechnya footage makes its way across the Internet. Only this time in glorious HD/4K vs a shitty 120x120px gif or .rm file.
