You're thinking of nulcear blast, fallout is what goes up into the air and comes down, nothing is going to block that.

They attract rain.. Maybe on the other side you'd have less? Most fallout would go away after a few weeks. Just have a few weeks of food and water and stay in your basement. Your neighbors die of radiation sickness and you can fight the survivors for their cans.

Fallout is only a problem with ground bursts. As soon as the contaminated material is airborne, mountains may provide some protection, but it depends on the prevailing winds.

mountains create updrafts and block air and moisture from crossing the range. The entire reason that the Mojave desert exists is because the Rockies block all of the moist ocean air from crossing in from the Pacific
If they're tall enough and the wind is right, mountains will block even high-altitude fallout particles from dropping on the other side of the range.
