this is not absolute, France for example has an entire separate institution- the academie francaise, filled with scholars they call 'the immortals' charged as the authoritative source for the french language.

The examples listed in this thread are naught but two to six decades old. Much of the english language, inherited from the germanic, or from the latin through french, have the same etymological basis since the days of the Proto-Indo-Europeans.

As is evidenced by the breakdown in clarity of communication witnessed in the english language over the past decade, that rooting etymologically to the word is the long term best choice

Sick. Prior to covid, someone would only be called "sick" if they had symptoms of a disease. Now, someone who "tests positive" for covid is often called sick, regarless of any symptoms.

They only changed two things: What it means when THEY say it, and what it means to them when THEY hear it. You don't have to subscribe to their definitions. Just clarify what you mean when you say it, and make it clear that you understand what they mean when they say it.
