I think putin has a strategy to take over all of europe.
Russia probably thinks that empires either expand or wither away. They are not static.
I think Russia will exploit European nativism to try and instigate a revolution in the EU and cause an incredible amount of chaos and bloodshed for the lulz.

Hitler didn't have an economy capable of withstanding prolonged warfare either. Germany imported all of its oil which is why they were forced to make a rush for the Caucasus and North Africa at the beginning of the war.

If you think of it this way, the growing resentment for how that war ended and how defeated it made Russia look has been locked in memory for a lot of Russian politicians, including the ring leader Putin.
