OK, here is something that it might sound strange at first, but save this post, because it might become 100% spot on prediction.
At this point NordStream-2 is fucked.
It costed 12 billion of dollars to build, and Germans paid (they own) 49% of it, of the construction cost, Russia 51%.
Now, from Russia's point, if the NS-2 is fucked, then next logical thing for Russia to do is to destroy existing gas pipe lines going via Ukraine during military activities in Ukraine.

Gamble is, Germans will speed up certification of the NS-2 and Russia would not have to pay Ukraine transit fees, (around 3 billion dollars/year), and there will be no need to renew contract with Ukraine in 2024.
Accidental ,military activity related, damage to the existing gas pipes in Ukraine now, would be the most logical thing to do for Russia.
Of course there is two more years of existing contract (till 2024), and if the gas pipe lines are operational then Russia will be receiving payment for gas sold to Europe,
but trying to get out of it in 2024 might be more tricky for Russia then having this issue to happen now, after the real fight against Ukrainian nazis starts, (in perhaps in the next 2-3 weeks).

Remember that Russia's final goal is to cut off Ukraine from having access to the Azov Sea and the Black Sea.
So the military activities will 100% escalate, this recognition of Donetsk and Luhansk is just a small first step.
Also Russia will take permanent control over Keiw, to secure full access to the Dniepro river and water supply to Crimea, that Keiw cut it out in 2014, by constructing a dam on the Crimean canal.
