Well being bullied as a kid over it has a simple explanation - kids will look for identifying features that make someone different from the group to ridicule them over and ostracize them. It’s a pretty basic human thing based on kinship rules when we were hunter-gatherers and kept to smaller groups. You look different so you are not a part of that tribe. Kids lack the conscientiousness most adults develop to at the very least treat people who are different tribes acceptably.
