Now whenever you read something posted by an actual, organic russian (for example on their chan 2ch, or on kc, or on here, when you manage to find an organic russian) they will be quick to express either devastation or disbelief at what Putin is precisely saying. They can't believe someone who was talking about Ukraine being a brother nation just a few months ago now calls it a completely fake country that needs to be annexed.
Russians also realize that this war of aggression will also mean the complete economic ruination of Russia. Not just because of sanctions which will ultimately lead to Russia being put in the same place as North Korea or Iran (even though right now they're wary of even excluding russia from SWIFT, but the sentiment will very quickly become very hawkish when they actually invade). Also because the war itself will drain Russia of at least thousands if not tens of thousands of souls and will be a drain on the budget, as currently 40% of the Russian army is at the Ukrainian border.
"Rubble" (lmao) will fall to like 300 rub per $1. And Russians earn their salaries in rubble. And these people are all scared.
