The only reasonable argument against age gap relationships is that the husband would die much sooner than his wife and leave her as a widow.

You know how sometimes people will vote against their own interests? This is often seen when poor people will vote in behalf of upper classes interests.

These laws and the culture that supports them disproportionately target males, both in how they are enforced, females tend to suffer lighter consequences both socially and legally, but also their very nature serves to unbalance gender relations in favour of females since it is a male's optimal sexual strategy to search for a younger partner while women as a general ruler prefer older ones, it's not a coincidence that there's a push to increase AoC laws (or at least the negative social reactions to older male/younger female relationships) even further as the population of older (and single) females increases.
