If we live for Jesus and not for ourselves, we would be a light for the people around us. When we follow Jesus we will have a direction and an eternal destination. We will know where we'll be headed.

Once we see the things of this world through the eyes of eternity, we wouldn't find any value in them. What's so good about this world that you can't take your eyes off of it and meditate on your own mortality? What has humanity done for you that you want to preserve it?

By believing in Him through His words and not in ourselves through our own beliefs that contradict His word. Our own self believes what is contrary to the word of God. Our own self believes that we're not saved or that we're condemned while the Bible says the contrary. To repent means to stop believing in ourselves so we can believe in Jesus. Repent and believe.
By obeying the words or teaching of Christ we will gradually lose confidence/faith/trust in ourselves so we can have the saving faith from God in Christ.
