NHK is Japan's national news but they just repeat stories from the AP or talk about local Japanese news.
But you need to think about what is considered "news" in America.

If you didn't know about these things your life would not fundamentally change. And so Japanese news is boring because they don't play those personal drama pieces and they heavily control their borders. Japanese news is basically the weather, local domestic violence if there is any, and things about local food. Kinda comfy at times.

NHK World used to be much more neutral; during Trump’s presidency they didn’t attack him much at all. Leading up to the election there was a definite shift, they even opened a New York office and started airing more hit pieces. It’s not really Japanese news, it’s more like English oriented news to get people interested in visiting Japan with their tourist dollars. They’ve got some kind of deal with PBS so they might be taking direction from the media in the US. Airs globally though, I’ve seen it in Europe and Egypt.
