What draws people to Pitbulls? Why can't they have a Lovely Dog like a Bracco Italiano? Why is Man like this? Also Pitbull and Pitbull Owner Hate Thread.
Question for Any Forums
They are a good medium sized, readily available guard dog breed. Because of the fighting history they are one of the few breeds that still has working instincts I would say. Most dogs have been turned into pet/lapdog breeds in the modern era. Now if you go get one from a shelter a mature dog it shouldnt be treated like a lapdog necessarily, but if you raise it from a puppy I don't have much issue with treating it like a regular dog.
It is getting hard to find dogs with actual working instincts anymore. Some malinois still do, some scent hounds still do (bloods, coon hounds etc.), and some hunting dogs like spaniels, beagles (if you find the right breeders) still do. But it you go buy a pure bred Rottweiler it probably wont even attack an intruder these days. Same with mastiffs, bulldogs, etc. Some of the Tibetan breeds still have working instincts as they are much closer to wild dogs (single seasonal estrus, molting cycle etc.).
I wouldn't call a Pitbull a good Guard Dog. I have seen their performance as Catch Dogs and they fit the bill. I think the Old Fashioned Mastiff makes the best Guard Dog. My issue is that people think Pitbulls are suitable for the household.
That is the boomerest dog I've ever seen.
I think one raised from a puppy is ok in a family tbqh unless you see some alarming tendencies along the way- but that goes for any dog. But it is 100% true that they have the capacity for more genuine aggression so your precautionary stance is warranted and I can understand it.
And if you give me 2-3 pitbulls in a yard, they will perform better than a mastiff these days as guard dogs. Ideally you are right that a larger dog breed with mastiff like instincts should be ideal and is what you want in a guard dog, but that's what I'm saying, every mastiff I've seen in that capacity (maybe a 6-10 over the years) is a big bumbling sweetheart. Seems like most individuals today just lack that bit of aggression that I suspect they were once bred to have generations ago. That's not to say you couldnt occassionally find one that fits the bill though.
It's the Terrier genes that make it more prone to offensive aggression rather than defensive aggression. They do tend to go beyond the perimeter.
The thing with Mastiffs is they are extremely patient, that is what you want when it comes to threat assessment. There's this new Dog in town called the Laizhou Hong Dog, extremely good instincts, like a Mastiff crossed with a Malinois. youtube.com
Yeah but the problem is that I'm not going to go buy and expensive mastiff, take the time and effort to use it as a guard dog, and then figure out is has zero aggressive instincts at all. With a pitbull you are going to have much better odds. Also I honestly dont really mind if they chase a little lol. Having said that I dont own any pit bulls but I can see the appeal.
See I sort of want a dog that will actually get extremely aggressive these days, because of the way so many breeds have been made to be docile. You'd be 100% right maybe 70-80 years ago though. Most of the traditional guard dog breeds are a crap shoot with bad odds.
How the fuck the dogs are political? Fuck off.
People feel that they are a good analogy to the racial situation. God knows I agree with the point they are trying to make too, but somewhere along the way they forgot that a dog is a dog and a jogger is a jogger.
It's not so much for me the amount of aggression, rather the type of aggression. For me the Laizhou Hong aces it since it hasn't been bred soft but at the same time has a good temperment when at ease.
Get a Caucasian Shepherd or a Rhodesian Ridgeback.
Shitbull = niggerdog
Caucasian Shepherds wouldn't do well in Brazil though, too hot for them.
Pitbulls can wreck any other dog though. Thats cool
How long has this been bred? I lived in China for 6 years. I'd be suspicious about their ability to develop a dog breed. Modern China is not a dog culture in the slightest.
It's just not acceptable in most situations. I like a predictable Dog.
Interesting backstory. Was the product of breeding Great Danes, GSDs and Dobermanns with Chinese Native Dogs during German Rule of Kiautschou Bay. Preceded Communism in China. en.wikipedia.org
Fair enough.
DESU I don´t get why people get their panties in a twist about dogfighting. Dogs and especially pits naturally like to fight, it should be allowed, that way you could rule out actual torture like having a bait dog.
Don´t get a pitbull if you can´t handle it ofc.
Not to the death. That will always be wrong.
I have a bloodhound breeding pair but I prefer collie breed dogs due to their intelligence, longevity, and scarcity of widespread genetic disorders. I have a breeding pair of kelpies. My bitch is the offspring of the picrel.
That is a pretty interesting origin. Imperial times were different. I'll do some reading on that breed. I've always thought the Chongqing dog was an interesting breed but it has lots of genetic defects, as do most Chinese purebreeds.
Agree, break up the fight as soon as one dog clearly submits or can´t keep on. Have a ref and a vets on site to take care of the dogs.
Kurds seem to get it right it seems:

The Chuandong Dog is the OG Chongqing Dog. Much healthier and often lives 20 years. There's a breeding kennel in the UK.
Same in areas of Turkestan too. Only the Afghans allow their Kuchi Dogs to fight to the death but that is only to settle disputes.
