I'll never understand why more people don't understand that the law is not objective, but is almost entirely up to the discretion of individual judges, and the interpretation of both crimes and appropriate sentencing can vary WILDLY from one judge to another, and even from one case to another, with the same judge.
Judges have WAY, WAY, WAY too much fucking power and jury trials were intended by the founding fathers as a check and balance against this, but it seems they weren't familiar with the Milgram experiments or the Stanford Prison experiments and weren't aware that the majority of people are not rational beings capable of higher ideals and dutiful citizenship, but programmable automata that are barely able to get through life one day at a time unless a strong parental authority figure is literally poking them on top of the head every two seconds telling them what to think and what to do and what to be.
