Unlike the Jewish west, hierarchy in class was not determined by wealth in India before. This is not to say that India was a communist/socialist civilization. Rather traders, merchants and businessman performed their own duties and had significant freedom to do so ,yet they wereconsidered third in hierarchy even after being rich. Indian subcontinent was the richest place on for millenias till colonization. Also like you said, Brahmins too had their own set of duties and different paths of life. Some were even harsher. The Kshatriyas had to sacrifice their lives all the time as theur performed their duties. Similarly Vaishyas and Shudras did their own. I am not saying that the varna system (modern day caste system but different to those who know) did not become corrupt over time, but each class basically performed their duty,did not have it easier compared to other castes and hance, followed dharma
