i think things are a lot better now. you used to have to rent movies and games and burn them, the internet was very slow, music was expensive, commercials were EVERYWHERE you couldn't escape them, most young people were very cynical and rude, education was slow and boring - rare or advanced books were hard to come by, clothing and fashion was more limited a few big stores controlled a near monopoly on most goods and services, niche hobbies were inaccessible for most people so everyone was pretty generic and boring or they were 'quirky' goth/emo which was just a way to be a poser without actually believing in anything.

really young people today don't know how good they have it. i spent so many years bored to tears in school and burning summer holidays just playing around outside looking at birds, insects, picking up games with kids nearby, it was very expensive to travel, camping we had to lug our parent's old military gear which weighed a ton, girls were also really boring - they spend all day talking on their phones or reading magazines or gossiping so they had little to no personality - acted like drones programmed by american mass media, relationships were not built around trust or common interests just two bored people doing what their parents did, nobody made big plans or had much hope for the future because opportunities didn't exist, you either worked for yourself in a trade or worked for a large company if one of your parents had an in, or you left to try life somewhere else.

EVERYONE drank constantly and excessively, alcoholism was a rampant disease, some people still smoked but a lot more than before -as smoking was dropping in popularity they changed the ingredients in the cigarettes making people buy more and smoke more. cars were still not that safe, accidents were common abs was new, young people died in accidents every year our school had a few memorials.

australian weather oscillates between pacific northwest windy/rainy and arizona dry heat. being outside is okay, but it gets old after a while, the problem is everything is 100-200 miles away from everything else so there is a lot of driving required, there are basically 6 large cities all about 1000 miles apart from each other, some urban development in the form of suburbs in a 30-60 mile radius around the city centers and then just nothing for miles and miles except dying little one road country towns. australia is a very dangerous place from the point of view of wild weather, if you don't know what you are doing you can easily get into trouble and die, whether in the water or in the outback. you wouldn't start driving across nevada, arizona, utah just randomly right? especially given the area is the same but the population is maybe less than 5% of yours.

you can still live like it's 1980 nothing stops you from avoiding modern creature comforts or technology. i bet older people in the 80s were also complaining and larping like it was still the 1940s, going off in the woods to build log cabins and hunt animals, refusing to fly with airplanes and insisting on writing letters. truth is every new decade is significantly better than the previous one and by a large margin. even if you aren't making a lot of money.
