World leaders descend on Munich for security conference - but Russia is not showing up
World leaders, including Ukrainian president Volodymyr Zelenskyy, US Vice President Kamala Harris and NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg are meeting in Munich this weekend.
It is part of the annual Munich Security Conference, much of which will be dominated by the crisis surrounding Ukraine.
At 12.30pm GMT, there will be speeches from UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres, German Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock, and US Secretary of State Antony Blinken.
Discussions will continue throughout the weekend, including a G7 summit of foreign ministers on Ukraine.
However, no delegation from Russia will be present. A representative from Moscow even attended in 2014 when Crimea was annexed.
Russia claims the summit is biased towards the West.
Daniela Schwarzer, a senior fellow at Harvard Kennedy School's Belfer Center, said: "Russia has limited interest in dialogue and in particular an open conversation about security in Europe.
"The conference is an occasion for the political West to show unity vis-a-vis Russia and vis-a-vis authoritarian regimes more generally."

UK getting ahead in information war
A feature of the current crisis in Ukraine has been the rapidity with which Western powers like the UK and US have put out information.
A government source told Sky News political correspondent Tamara Cohen: "President Putin needs to know the world is watching, and that we will hold him to account.
"We will also counter the disinformation he will inevitably seek to spread so that facts are known and the world knows and understands exactly what he’s up to."

United States-Poland news conference
The United States and Poland are holding a joint news conference.
US Defence Secretary Lloyd Austin says an invasion of Ukraine could see tens of thousands of people fleeing into Poland "trying to save themselves and their families from the scourge of war".
He adds that the US is continuing to provide material to Ukraine to help it defend itself, alongside Poland and others.
Mr Austin says: "It is ironic that what Mr Putin did not want to see happen was a stronger NATO on his flank - and that's exactly what he will see going forward".
The defence secretary says the Biden White House intends to provide 250 M1-A1 Abrams tanks to Poland, alongside other equipment like aircraft.

More forces moving into border region - US
US Defence Secretary Lloyd Austin says, despite what Russia is claiming, that more Russian troops are being moved into the border region with Ukraine.
He adds he "has not seen any evidence" of troops moving away from Ukraine.
Mr Austin says things logistical capabilities are also being increased.

Russian nuclear drills moved in show of strength

It is a shame nobody asked US Defence Secretary Lloyd Austin about the nuclear drills Russia has announced will take place on Saturday, which Vladimir Putin is set to oversee.
It sounds like they are Russia’s annual nuclear drills, which are normally held in the autumn but now brought forward.
In fact, the US joint chief of staff warned a few weeks ago that this may happen as a show of strength.
As we know, Russia has the most powerful nuclear forces in the world.
They will fire cruise and ballistic missiles to test them out, and it will involve the Black Sea Fleet which is located around Crimea.
The Northern Fleet and the air force will also be involved.
These will be huge exercises, and a huge show of Russia’s strength.

'Stronger sanctions than 2014' being prepared - Poland
The Polish prime minister, Mateusz Morawiecki, has said that sanctions stronger than those introduced in 2014 are being prepared against Russia.
It was in 2014 that Russia annexed Crimea.

Greece calls for easing of tensions from Moscow
Greece's foreign minister, Nikos Dendias, has called for an easing of tensions after meeting with his Russian counterpart Sergei Lavrov.
Mr Dendias said: "We are listening carefully to Russia's concern about its security and we are also taking into consideration the concerns of the rest of the European countries.
"Within this framework, we discussed the situation in Ukraine and I had the chance to stress... the need for immediate de-escalation of tensions."
It comes as the West seeks to continue keeping diplomatic channels with the Kremlin open.

Russian troops almost doubled in region since 30 January - United States
The US ambassador Organisation for Security and Co-operation in Europe (OSCE) says Russia now has between 169,000 and 190,000 troops around Ukraine.
This compares to roughly 100,000 on 30 January.
Michael Carpenter added: "This is the most significant military mobilisation in Europe since the Second World War."
The OSCE is a political forum for peace, and also has been observing the conflict in eastern Ukraine since 2014.
The ambassador adds that Russia is "intent" on creating a pretext to justify an invasion into Ukraine.
