because of that fact that, in Christianity, the only thing that matters is the afterlife, the only thing that matters in this life is conversion. because "Jesus forgives", no Christian actually has to practice any morality or be a good person; a rapist can enter heaven as easily as a saint, assuming both believe in Jesus (and i suppose for Catholics, assuming both have confessed recently baring circumstances). the ONLY good action that can be achieved in this life is to convert people, to "save" them. no improvements to this life must be made, this life doesn't matter at all (and therefore, politics, economics, technology, none of this matters), the only concern is the afterlife and believing in Jesus so you don't burn in hell.
so yes, they do it for free. it's literally the only way a Christian knows how to act "morally", since morality doesn't matter outside of conversion.
