Without the state propping up car companies, building your roads and maintaining them, that system would cease to exist fast. Cars cant go unless its a flat road paid for by every taxpayer. Oh did I forget to mention roads are an ugly eyesore and ruin ecosystems?

IF a state would want you to stop travelling anywhere, like authoritarian states regularly do, they could (and will) simply set up roadblocks, checkpoints or close down gas stations. You know what doesn´t require extra infrastructure to get from a to b in an emergency? You two feet or a bicycle.

The issue with anti-car agitation is that they’re focused on the wrong things. You’ll never achieve your aims looking at cars, bikes, roads, parking lots, or highways. Transportation is wrong because the buildings are wrong and if you fix the buildings, you’d have to pay people to drive. The forced separation of where people live, work, learn, shop, and play needs to end so that the distances people have to travel each week can be shrunk to a manageable size. That only happens when population densities increase to provide labor and customer base for a full suite of amenities based inside a neighborhood. Our built environment is all wrong for car-free life and higher gas taxes won’t change that faster than political expedience eliminates those taxes.
